In
2002, California passed the world’s first law to reduce
global warming pollution from passenger vehicles. This trailblazing
law -- the Pavley Bill -- requires a nearly 30% phased-in
reduction of greenhouse gases from automobiles, starting in
2009 and ending in 2016. Bluewater Network conceived, drafted,
and championed this landmark legislation (authored by Assembly
Member Fran Pavley).
Because California's automobile market is so large, and because
California has authority to set vehicle emission reduction
requirements that can be adopted by other states, this law
will significantly reduce greenhouse gas pollution nationwide.
Eleven states have already adopted California’s law
and Canada has adopted similar requirements. That means more
than one-third of the North American car market is subject
to these new standards.
Bluewater Network is now defending the law in court against
auto manufacturers’ attempt to overturn it. With your
help, we will continue our work to protect this substantial
victory for the planet!
Bluewater is proud to be a member of the Clean Cars Campaign
coalition, a group formed to support the Pavley law. For detailed
