Ford has broken its promise to protect
the planet. In 2003, Ford promised to turn the company into a force
for environmental good by improving SUV fuel mileage 25% and going
“beyond the requirements of the law to preserve and protect
the environment”. Within three years, Ford reneged on this
pledge to boost SUV fuel mileage, lobbied Congress against improved
fuel mileage standards, and moved the company to last place on fuel
efficiency.
Now Ford has set an internal goal to reduce global warming emissions
45% by 2030, without any measurable results in the near future.
This goal could be accomplished today, using existing technology.
Why wait a quarter century?
Despite global warming, increased
fuel prices, and oil dependence concerns, progress on important
fuel efficiency legislation has been stalled, and Ford’s vehicles
have become less efficient
than any other major automaker. The result? Pollution from Ford
vehicles will continue to escalate global warming just when it’s
most critical to start reducing it.
Bluewater has unleashed a nationwide pledge drive and ad campaign
asking Ford to protect the planet. Send
Ford's Chief Executive Officer, Alan Mulally, your pledge committing
not to buy a Ford vehicle (including Volvo, Mazda, Jaguar, and Land/Range
Rover) until Ford commits to stop warming the planet. Until then,
the planet cannot afford a Ford.
We urgently need your help -- please send
your pledge today and tell your friends. And please consider
a contribution to help
us buy our next ad!

Bluewater Network Executive Director speaks about Ford’s broken
promises to build clean cars at the Ford Motor Company’s annual
meeting. CEO Bill Ford Jr. pledges to meet with Bluewater and other
environmental organizations to discuss our concerns.
Bluewater Network staff and volunteers
staged a global warming educational event by using bicycles to tow
a smoke-spewing Ford SUV through the San Francisco Gay Pride Parade.
The SUV was painted with “Gas is Driving Global Warming”
and “Boycott Ford.” Volunteers handed the crowd quick
facts about Ford and global warming, and over 200 parade spectators
signed postcards promising to boycott Ford vehicles. See

The California Legislature passes AB 1493, landmark legislation
sponsored by Bluewater Network which reduces greenhouse gas emissions
from passenger vehicles and light-duty trucks. California Governor
Gray Davis signs AB 1493 into law. As part of the Alliance of Automobile
Manufacturers, Ford threatens to sue the state.
