Urge Carnival CEO Micky Arison to stop polluting our air and water!

Background

Carnival Cruise Lines, the largest cruise company in the world, is currently participating in negotiations with Bluewater Network . While Carnival has not committed to specific targets and timelines to stop fouling the nation’s air and waters , they appear ready to take positive steps towards doing so and we are optimistic about our discussions. Nonetheless, we need to keep pressure on Carnival until they make further commitments.

While Carnival purports to have a standard of protecting the marine wildlife and coral reefs your passengers pay to see, your actual practices leave a great deal to be desired.  By refusing to commit to specific targets and timelines and by shielding your company’s performance behind a screen of “complying with the laws of many nations” you have in effect committed your company to a policy of obfuscation and inaction.  Of particular concern is your company’s lack of interest in stopping illegal dumping of ballast water, or in adopting stricter standards over wastewater, air pollution, and raw sewage discharge.



				 



Please take responsibility for your vessels and clean up your act.  I ask that you:







1.      Sign legally binding agreements to not discharge waste of any kind; 



2.      Reduce air emissions by investing in new technologies and cleaner fuels and engines; 



3.      Pay for independent inspectors on every vessel;  



4.      Install low-frequency sonar on every ship to alert the crew of whales in the ship’s path.
